Filthy holiday stay refund: who helps?
Summary
If a booked stay was filthy accommodation and you want a refund, who helps is the booking platform or host complaints team first with dated photos, then your card issuer for Section 75 or chargeback where the payment route fits, and Citizens Advice for letter wording and Trading Standards style reporting. Advisers will explain rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 for a service not provided with reasonable care and skill. They will not inspect the property, chase the host for you, or guarantee a full refund.
Key information
- Keep booking confirmation, house rules, photos or video with timestamps, messages to the host, and any move out or rebooking costs.
- Complain in writing while the stay is ongoing if you can: ask for a clean room, move, or partial refund.
- Package holidays and linked travel often have ATOL / Package Travel routes as well as ordinary consumer rights.
- Peer to peer host stays (Airbnb style) still sit with the platform complaints path first in most cases.
- Citizens Advice will explain when a stay may not match the description or not be provided with reasonable care and skill, point you to consumer help and holiday does not match the description, and help you choose card claim vs small claims vs ADR. They will not phone the host, lodge the claim, or value compensation as a court would.
- Your card issuer may consider Section 75 (credit card, scheme limits) or chargeback. They will not visit the property. Evidence quality matters.
Practical guidance
- Host / property manager / platform complaints with your photo pack and a clear ask (clean, move, or refund).
- Citizens Advice consumer helpline 0808 223 1133 for letter help if they stonewall.
- Card issuer (Section 75 / chargeback) once you have the trail and a refusal or silence.
- Booking brand ADR / ombudsman style scheme if the platform publishes one. ABTA / ATOL where the booking is a package or protected.
- Money Claim Online only after free doors and deadlines are clear.
- Ask the Shaman: free door routing.
