Parking ticket wrong registration: who helps?

Summary

If you got a parking ticket because the wrong registration was entered (pay app, keypad, or ANPR mismatch), who helps is the operator or council appeal desk first with proof of the correct plate and payment, then POPLA / IAS (private) or the council / tribunal path (public), and Citizens Advice if letters escalate. New drivers often mistype a digit. Advisers will help you set out the evidence. They will not cancel the charge by phone without process.

Key information

  • Keep the payment receipt, app screenshot, location, time, and a photo of your plate.
  • Say clearly: payment was made / attempt was made for this vehicle; the VRM on the notice is wrong or mistyped.
  • Private land and council tickets use different appeal doors. Read the notice.
  • The operator or council will review payment logs against location and time, then cancel or uphold. They will not always accept a screenshot without checking ANPR / pay logs.
  • Citizens Advice will explain private vs council routes and deadlines (parking tickets). They will not lodge the POPLA appeal as your paid representative.

Practical guidance

  • Operator or council appeal within the deadline with payment proof and correct VRM.
  • If private and rejected: POPLA or IAS as named on the rejection (POPLA).
  • If council and rejected: follow the Notice of Rejection path (including London Tribunals where relevant).
  • Citizens Advice Adviceline 0800 144 8848 if debt collectors appear.
  • Ask the Shaman: free door routing.
