Energy supplier took the wrong direct debit: who helps?

Summary

If an energy supplier collects the wrong direct debit (the wrong amount, or weekly when you agreed monthly), who helps first is the supplier complaints team. Ask them to correct the instruction, refund what should not have been taken, and confirm the next collection in writing. Where there was an error in the payment, the Direct Debit Guarantee is a bank door: your bank or building society should give a full and immediate refund of the amount paid. That refund does not wipe a genuine energy bill. The supplier can still bill you for energy you used. Citizens Advice can explain the complaint order and the difference between a payment error and a higher bill you simply disagree with. Ofgem does not decide your individual refund. The Energy Ombudsman can, after you have given the supplier eight weeks or received a deadlock letter.

Key information

  • Keep the mandate, the emails about the amount, and the bank statement lines that show the extra collections.
  • The Direct Debit Guarantee, as published by the scheme, says the organisation should tell you 10 working days before a change to the amount, date or frequency, unless you agreed something else. If there is an error by the organisation or by the bank, you are entitled to a full and immediate refund from the bank of the amount paid.
  • A refund under the guarantee can be reclaimed later if you were not entitled to it. Budget for the supplier asking for the correct monthly amount.
  • If the money leaving the account has left you unable to pay rent, council tax or food, say that in the complaint and ask about the supplier Priority Services Register. That is a support flag, not a write off.
  • Cancelling the Direct Debit at the bank stops future collections. It does not erase charges already built up, and some tariffs cost more if you stop paying that way.
  • Citizens Advice: The consumer helpline will help you separate three things people mix up: a collection error, a price rise, and a back bill. They can explain the supplier complaint, the bank guarantee, and when the Energy Ombudsman opens. They will not log into your energy account, reverse a payment, or negotiate a payment plan for you. Helpline 0808 223 1133.
  • the Energy Ombudsman: The ombudsman looks at supplier and some network disputes after eight weeks, or sooner with a deadlock letter. They can tell a supplier to refund, correct an account, apologise, or pay a small amount for the trouble. They will not take the case on day one, and they do not replace Ofgem’s rule making. Ofgem supervises firms. It does not umpire your bill. Start here only after the supplier stage: Energy Ombudsman. Phone 0330 440 1624.
  • the bank: If you tell the bank there was an error in the Direct Debit, the guarantee says you get a full and immediate refund of that payment from the bank. The bank is not deciding whether your energy tariff is fair. If the bank refuses, complain to the bank and then the Financial Ombudsman Service. The scheme itself explains the limit: the guarantee covers errors in setup or collection, not every dispute about the underlying bill. Read your rights and safeguards.
  • Energy supplier: Corrects the mandate, refunds a mistaken collection, confirms the next amount They will not: Does not have to write off energy you actually used. Reach: Complaints route on the bill or in the account.
  • Your bank: Refunds an erroneous Direct Debit under the guarantee They will not: Does not judge the tariff or stop the supplier rebilling the correct sum. Reach: The bank or building society that holds the account.
  • Citizens Advice: Explains the order of doors and hardship options They will not: Does not reverse the payment. Reach: 0808 223 1133.
  • Energy Ombudsman: Can order a refund, an account correction, or a small award after the wait They will not: Will not open on day one, and is not Ofgem. Reach: energyombudsman.org.
  • Financial Ombudsman Service: Looks at a bank that refuses a guarantee refund, after the bank complaint They will not: Does not replace the energy complaint. Reach: Financial Ombudsman Service.

Practical guidance

  • Supplier complaints team, in writing: what was agreed, what was taken, the dates, and what you want (refund of the extra, a corrected monthly figure, written notice before the next change).
  • Bank under the Direct Debit Guarantee if the collection itself was an error. Say that phrase. Ask for the refund of the wrong payment.
  • Citizens Advice if you are unsure which of those two doors fits, or you need a breathing space conversation because the extra debit caused hardship.
  • Energy Ombudsman at eight weeks or on a deadlock letter. Do not wait past the 12 month window that runs from the supplier final decision. The existing wiki page Complain to the Energy Ombudsman covers that time limit.
  • Ofgem only to report a firm that is breaking licence rules, not to get your money back this week.
